Immerse yourself in the footsteps of heroes as we guide you through this iconic World War II trail, offering a profound connection to Australia's military history. The backdrop of the beautiful, rugged and sometimes harsh terrain of the PNG jungle, the very ground upon which the events of 1942 took place, sets the scene for our master story tellers to bring the voices of our ancestors to life.
Our Kokoda Track tours provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to trek through the rugged terrain and dense jungles of Papua New Guinea, retracing the path of the brave soldiers who fought in the Kokoda Campaign. Led by our expert guides, who possess extensive local knowledge and historical expertise, you'll gain a deep understanding of the battles, sacrifices, and triumphs that unfolded along this hallowed ground.
Kokoda Historical wants you to get excited about Australian history! We aim to bring to life the many numbers of ordinary people that became extraordinary heroes of our proud nation. We are talking about the soldiers, civilians and Papuans that were embroiled in the Second World War in the jungles of the Owen Stanley Ranges. They are true Australian heroes that stood between tyranny and freedom and-we will remember them.
So, pack up your troubles in your old kit bag, choose your trek and immerse yourself in the past as you join us on a pilgrimage over the Kokoda Track like no other. You may choose to start your journey from the north (Kokoda Village) and follow the desperate fighting withdrawal taken be the Australian forces being pushed back by the Japanese to Port Moresby. Or choose to start on the offensive trekking south from Owers’ Corner as we follow the route our troops took in order to push the Imperial Japanese Forces back to Kokoda and beyond.
We have over a decade of experience in trekking the battlefields of PNG, studying our proud history, interviewing the veterans, serving in the Australian Defence Force and bringing the history to life through innovative methods.
We tailor every trek to ensure where possible that we stay at the key locations on the battlefield. Our standard Kokoda Tour is 11 days which includes the return travel from Australia. This allows enough time to fully appreciate the history of Kokoda and also to make side-trips along the Track. If you have a group booking of 6 or more people, we can adjust the length and the departure/return dates to suit. For group bookings click here.
The Koiari and Orokaiva people that live along the Kokoda Track are predominantly Seventh Day Adventist (SDA), and the observance of their Sabbath is very important to them. The Sabbath begins every Friday evening and continues all day Saturday. As a consequence, many people in the villages will not undertake any work during this period. Things such as fruit, soft drinks and vegetables are not on sale during this period.
You will also tour Port Moresby to discover the strategic significance of this sprawling PNG capital city to the 1942 Kokoda battle. Pay homage to the brave soldiers at the National War Memorial and admire the vast anthropological collection at the National Museum. Visit the wreck of the M.V. Macdhui, whose loss in a direct hit by the Japanese was deeply felt by the Australian troops and pay your respects at the Bomana War Cemetery, the final resting place for many of the fallen soldiers.
Our Kokoda pilgrimage will have you laughing, crying, leave you wet and muddy but safe & sound and with a lasting legacy of what it means to be an Australian.
Upon booking you will receive a copy of Kokoda Legend-Captian Sam Templeton by our very own David Howell.
