Celebrating the Opening of the Kokoda Gallery: A Tribute to Kokoda's World War II Legacy

We are thrilled to announce the opening of the Kokoda Gallery, an exhibition dedicated to honouring the courageous soldiers and significant events that shaped the history of the Kokoda Track during World War II. Located in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, the gallery stands as a testament to the enduring spirit and resilience of those who fought and sacrificed on this historic battleground.

On November 3, 2023, dignitaries and history enthusiasts gathered for the official opening of the Kokoda Gallery. The ceremony was held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, and was attended by the Honourable James Marape MP, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea and the Honourable Matt Thistlethwaite Minister of Parliament of Australia. The gallery's opening marks a significant milestone in preserving the legacy of Kokoda and ensuring that the stories of heroism and sacrifice are forever etched in our collective memory.

The Kokoda Gallery offers a captivating journey through the experiences and challenges faced by both Australian and Papua New Guinean troops during World War II. It showcases a wealth of historical artifacts, photographs, documents, and immersive displays that provide visitors with a comprehensive understanding of the events that unfolded along the Kokoda Track.

As part of their commitment to preserving history, Kokoda Historical has made a generous contribution to the exhibition by donating three uniforms representing the Australian, Japanese, and Papuan infantry battalions. These uniforms serve as powerful symbols of the diverse forces that clashed in the Kokoda campaign, highlighting the complex dynamics of the conflict and the different perspectives of those involved. By including these uniforms, Kokoda Historical has added a tangible and visual element to the exhibition, allowing visitors to connect with the experiences of the soldiers on a deeper level.

We also donated an original Medal for Loyal Service to the National Museum and Art Gallery (NMAG) for their new World War II galleries. The medal, symbolising dedication and sacrifice, was presented to Dr. Andrew Connelly, the Military and Cultural Heritage Advisor to the PNG National Museum and Art Gallery. This significant contribution adds yet another layer of depth to the museum's collection, preserving the memory of those who served in Papua New Guinea during the war. Read more here.
