This morning the group had a tour of Kokoda including the memorial at Kokoda Plateau and the Bert Kienzle museum. Then they began their trek along the tractor trail and up to the villages of Kovelo and Hoi. This evening the group are at the lovely village of Deniki. Deniki, a small village located about eight kilometres south of Kokoda, was the seventh staging post on the Kokoda Track. From Deniki its possible to see into the Yodda Valley and discern Kokoda and its nearby airstrip.
Deniki figured prominently in the history of the 39th Battalion. It was to Deniki that the elements of the battalion that had been engaged at Oivi withdrew on 27 July 1942.
