KOKODA TRACK UPDATE - 16 APRIL 2015 (DAY 2)

  • Tour Update

This morning the group were up very early to get a good cooked breakfast and all packed for the adventure ahead. Once all the gear had been loaded up into the vans they started out on the road to Owers Corner. This is a steep, winding road which has sheer drops off the side - quite treacherous in places. They passed MacDonalds corner which used to be the start of the Kokoda Track in 1942. They have since built a road to Owers Corner which has shaved 7 Kms off the original track.

After taking group photos under the Archway at Owers Corner they started with a steep descent down to the mighty Goldie River. They crossed the Goldie in waist-high water. They have started to acclimatise to the warm, humid conditions with a half day trekking which will ease them in gently to the challenge that lies ahead. All have safely made it to Good Water (the actual Dump 66) where they have set up camp at a lovely place called Good Water.

They arrived with plenty of time to take a relaxing swim in the pristine water and then have a hot meal afterwards. Excitement is high on this first night sleeping under the stars on the Kokoda Track.
