January 2016 marks the 74th Anniversary of the fall of Rabaul. Of the 1400 men that comprised Lark Force only 400 would survive. After the Japanese invasion of Rabaul on 23 January 1942, many soldiers would perish in the jungle either at the hands of nature as they tried to escape or more brutally at the hands of the Japanese.
160 Australian soldiers of Lark Force who had surrendered to the Japanese were murdered at Tol Plantation. Another 1053 people comprising of Lark Force POW's and Rabaul civilians would loose their life on the biggest loss of POW's at sea in the Second World War, on-board the Montevideo Muru.
