Trekking Kokoda and the Northern Beachheads with my brother and some friends, in the footsteps of our grandfather who was fought that bloody campaign, was our way of commemorating the sacrifices that were made in defence of Australia. But more than that, as they say about travelling, it is the journey as much as the destination that matters, and for us, it was all about the journey. Meeting and walking with our shy and gentle porters was a highlight, as was being greeted warmly by the villagers every afternoon, after a long and tiring walk. Fond memories of the beauty of Sanananda and the simple village life will remain with me forever.
